Free Trade Agreements Georgia

At present, products manufactured in Georgia have access to one third of the global consumer market through free trade regimes, which total more than 2.3 billion consumers. The feasibility study for free trade with India has been completed and the first round of negotiations will take place very soon. The feasibility study of free trade with Israel is also in its final phase. Photo: Nino Alavidze/Agenda.ge. The objective of Chapter 6 is to improve the legal framework for investors from EFTA countries and Georgia who invest in the markets of the other country. This objective is achieved through the granting of non-discriminatory rights of establishment and exploitation (“commercial presence”) in sectors not covered by the Chapter on Trade in Services. In some economic sectors, the parties have introduced into their national legislation reservations concerning the treatment of the act due to restrictions (Annex XIV). The chapter provides for a periodic review of these reservations in order to increase the obligations of the contracting parties over time. The provisions on the protection of intellectual property rights (Chapters 7 and XV) concern, inter alia, trademarks, copyrights, patents and geographical indications and contain provisions on the enforcement of intellectual property rights and cooperation between the parties. They are based on the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and provide for a high level of protection taking into account most-favoured-nation principles and national treatment.

Before Brexit came into force, we negotiated with the UK government, which signed and ratified [the free trade agreement]. Now we expect the same from Britain. We believe that it will ratify the agreement in about a month. It is important for us to complete this process on time,” Arveladze said. It has been five years since dcFTA was implemented and two years have passed since the free trade agreement with China. It is interesting to carry out ex-post analyses to determine the impact of these free trade agreements on the Georgian economy. The ex-post analysis will aim to determine the qualitative and quantitative effects observed at the macro-sectoral level after Georgia`s signature of the DCFTA and FTA with China. In addition, the research paper will attempt to determine whether the DCFTA and FTA have led to welfare gains with China. . .
