A number of + noun is a plural meeting, and it takes a plural verblage. The number of + nouns is a singular subject, and it takes a singular verb. The subject and the verb are the most important elements of a sentence. The relationship between the subject and the verb depends on two themes: the person and the number. The verb of a sentence must match the subject in terms of person and number.
