Finally updated The Library with my most recent read — Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett, one of my favorite authors. Actually, I also read Robert Silverberg‘s Hawksbill Station several weeks ago, but as it’s out-of-print, I can’t very well link it to Amazon.com. A week ago, on Monday, I had an entry regarding the book Digital Mosaics. Well, I read through most of it, and found a very interesting section where the author discusses what […]

I’ve gotten very interested in wearable computers lately. It’s not just SF anymore; these things are being built by hobbyists for not much more than desktop systems. The main issues are buying a display unit for the eye or to sit at waist-level, and battery life. They’ve been solved, but you have to be willing to sauder a few wires together. In particular, I’d like to try building a KeyGlove, a glove with […]

Just got finished reading (most of) Steven Holtzman’s Digital Mosaics, a book about the aesthetics of cyberspace. The main gist of the book is about what, really, cyberspace is, and what it can do. Fortunately it doesn’t go on about incredible technological changes and so forth (like another book I definitely didn’t buy that predicted “Someday mice and keyboards will be replaced with voice-recognition technology!” Wow! […]

Last night I found my favorite feature on netgrocer — automatic, repeating orders. Every week (or two weeks, or whatever), you can have groceries automatically shipped to you and billed to your credit card. Sweet! And now for something completely different. Note: After future review, I’m unhappy with the following two paragraphs. It’s unfair and untrue to schoolbus drivers. I wish I never posted it, but now that it’s out here […]

Went to see Antz, and I must admit I’m impressed. It’s a PG-rated film; there’s some swearing, some violence (a very cool battle scene, for instance), and death. The entire film is artfully done, there are no musical numbers (thank the heavens), and the story is blessfully free of “Look! Look! The moral of the story!” moments. Complex plot, but fun. It’s kinda like trying to describe Babe; it’s just not […]

Ahhhh, it’s October, my favorite month of the year! The weather is turning crisp, the leaves are turning, and we’re starting to think of Halloween and Thanksgiving. Meantime, check out this bizarre log that Sci and I came up with today. Think Monty Python sketch. WATER by Gurney and Sci We interrupt this broadcast to bring you this special interruption: This broadcast has been interrupted with a special interruption. The interruption […]

I’ve been thinking about re-vamping this site. I like the “home” idea, but I think it needs jazzing up; more rooms, perhaps? A more detailed blueprint? Graphics showing what the rooms look like? While we’re at it, I’d like to provide some actual content here other than this diary. If/when I get CGI worked out, perhaps throw up some CGI and Java games. We’ll […]

Well, I’m happy to report that my order from http://www.netgrocer.com/ came in on Friday. Everything was well-packed, and in very good condition. I’ll be buying more from them from now on. I see somebody’s writing a massively-multiplayer game based on Tolkien’s “if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I’m flattered to death by now” Lord of the Rings series. It’s a good idea, really: the world will support up to 10,000 players […]

According to Ziff-Davis online, of those who read Starr’s report online, most looked for the “naughty bits” than the sections outlining reasons for the President’s impeachment. I guess sex still sells, huh? Meanwhile, I’ve found something I’ve been waiting for: http://www.netgrocer.com/. Buy non-perishable items online, get them FedEx’ed to your door, and pay three bucks shipping ($5 for orders over $50). And, yes, it’s done through […]

Glad to see somebody isn’t towing the party line of “Microsoft sucks.” The folks over at the Why Apple Macintosh Computers Are Worthless Home Page (Ed: now defunct) have some very thought-provoking articles on why Macs aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In particular, The Emperor’s Clothes by Edwin M. Gnitchel compares the Macintosh system 7.5.3 to Windows 95, and reveals some very interesting things. Unfortunately, they can’t […]
